Testimonials

“I just wanted to thank Steve for taking the time to do a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu workshop here in Albany, NY.

Tons of fun, even when he was introducing me to the ‘heart attack’ and ‘shoulder of justice’ techniques!

It was a geat workshop on guard passing strategies based around 3 basic concepts that are pervasive in all passes: the barrell, pike and rudder, tied in with the Fundamental 5 of passing. It really helped simplfy my game as I could see where I have been having challenges with certain passes.

The guys really got to see the value of the I-method and how these 3 concepts could be easily adapted to their games.

He finished off with some top game material, and introduced the shoulder of justice and flowed into a nice po-mission (positional submission) with the heart attack.

We then went knee-on-stomach and tightened up our near side armbar, and as they counterd went into the baseball bat choke.

We had new white belts to blues that left with an appreciation for the I-method and how easily it improved their skill sets and performance.

Great training experience, can't wait until the next one!

“On this past Sunday, April 17th, the AMAC hosted SBGI Instructor/Coach, Stephen Whittier, for his awesome Aliveness Seminar!

The 6-1/2 hour Seminar was absolutely chock full of BJJ drills and skills training as well as functional clinching.

We commenced the day with ground game fundamentals (passing the guard) and segued into Steve's innovative metaphors and creative concepts for ensuring an effective guard pass. All 16 participants demonstrated improvements in their performances after the day was done.

Throughout the day, Steve facilitated the learning process by having students who had specific questions or trouble with certain areas, actually share with the class what they were struggling with. (Steve's Inquiry contribution to the SGBI "I"-Method!)

What struck me was how Steve deftly coached these students through their difficulties without "giving them the answer" but rather having them try varying scenarios to determine what might work best. He then had the entire class work through these same scenarios so that the experiential learning process would be in play for everyone present.

During the afternoon session, we focused on clinch game fundamentals and takedown set-ups. Again, the Seminar environment was both fun and challenging as everyone checked their ego at the door and got in an incredible day of ‘training to learn’ vs. ‘fighting to win!’
