Elite Fitness & MMA Conditioning Trainer, Kevin Kearns, Trains a Packed House; Nexus Authorized As First Burn With Kearns-Certified Training Facility

Kevin Kearns, master fitness trainer and strength & conditioning coach to fifteen professional mixed martial artists including Kenny Florian, Marcus Davis, and Patrick Cote, recently conducted a seminar to a packed house of 40 attendees, ranging in age from teens to early '60s.

At the seminar, Coach Kearns presented Nexus Chief Instructor Stephen Whittier with a diploma recognizing him as the first ever certified trainer in the Burn With Kearns Core Fitness and MMA Conditioning method, and Nexus as Kearns' first authorized training facility. Whittier and Kearns have worked together for nearly seven years. A certification course at Nexus for martial arts school owners and personal trainers is planned for May.

NEXUS MARTIAL ARTS’ WEEKEND OF EVENTS HONORS MEMORY OF LATE WAREHAM POLICE OFFICER & MARTIAL ARTIST

Wareham, MA, March 24, 2009 – Nexus Martial Arts & Fitness in Wareham, MA recently held a weekend of activities in honor of well-respected police officer and martial artist, Christopher Argentinis, who died in an accident while on duty just over ten years ago.

The first event was the Nexus Intramural Youth Grappling Tournament, which drew a full house of family and friends to support Nexus students from ages four to fourteen competing with others in their age groups in the grappling art of Brazilian jiu-jitsu. All the entrance fees for the tournament are being put toward a memorial scholarship in Mr. Argentinis’s name, which will be used to sponsor a local child into the program who would not otherwise be able to participate due to financial hardship.

“After we opened the school in town, I kept meeting people who had known or even trained with Officer Argentinis,” explains Nexus owner and Chief Instructor, Stephen Whittier. “It quickly became apparent that he was not only an admired member of the community, but also the first person around here to practice and teach mixed martial arts and Brazilian jiu-jitsu. Once we found out that he had aspired to have a school of his own one day and share his passion for martial arts with kids, creating a youth tournament and scholarship in his name seemed like a great way to carry on that dream. We were really thrilled with the level of skill and sportsmanship everyone demonstrated at the tournament.”

Also wanting to pay tribute to Mr. Argentinis’s service as a police officer, Whittier capped off the weekend with a special defensive tactics and subject control seminar for area Law Enforcement personnel.

“I really enjoy getting to train Law Enforcement personnel,” said Whittier, who has worked with officers on the local, state, and federal levels. “Instead of showing officers martial arts techniques that may not translate to the field, we teach, and have them apply in real time, skills that translate to their specific tactical needs.”

According to Chris Corner, one of the attendees, “Mr. Whitters Law Enforcemnt seminar was the best I have ever seen. It was held in honor of the late Christopher Argentinis and held at no cost to any officer who attended. The class gave the officers some new and ground-breaking ideas on defensive tactics. Talking with the other officers who attended, they were all very impressed and could not wait for a chance to take another Nexus seminar.”

On a more personal note, he added: “Chris Argentinis was the first in this area to train in mixed martial arts. Being a friend and former student of his, I know the events would have brought a smile to his face.”

Nexus Martial Arts was voted the area's #1 Fitness & Health Center by the Gateway magazine in the publication's Gateway Favorites competition. The full results of the competition were published in the May 21st, 2008 addition.

From the write-up by Gateway Editor Beth Perdue:
"Owner and Chief Instructor Stephen Whittier said he believes the center's popularity has to do not only with the quality of the programs offered, but also with the way martial arts can be a challenging and effective alternative to traditional fitness programs.

"The martial arts center draws a variety of members, he said, from the two-day-a-week hobbyist to those interested in getting interested in serious competition....

"Part of the attraction is that members are immersed in a learning environment where they are trying to improve their skills, according to Mr. Whittier. Often, finding themselves in better shape comes as a wonderful side benefit.

"'When you're training for something, you're training in a dynamic environment, you have to be in the moment,' he said. 'You have things to aspire to aside from being in shape.'"

"For some, the martial arts approach also helps them stick to the program longer, Mr. Whittier said, adding, 'They just see it as a fun and motivating environment.'"

Dartmouth College Seminar

Nexus Chief Instructor Stephen Whittier was back at Dartmouth College last month for to teach another seminar for the school's Integrated Martial Arts club (now an affiliated training group). Lots of great people, functional training and rolling!

Murilo "Ninja" Rua Wins at EliteXC!

Our good friend and training associate, former Pride fighter / EliteXC middleweight champ Murilo "Ninja" Rua stopped by in Massachusetts to visit last week after his dominant win over highly-touted opponent, Tony Bonnello, on June 14th in Hawaii. Ninja made short work of Bonnello, a BJJ Black Belt and Muay Thai kickboxer who came into the fight with an undefeated 16-0 pro record. Ninja secured the clinch early on, passed Bonnello's guard and demonstrated some truly awesome jiu-jitsu on the way to a first round TKO. We look forward to his continued success, and his next training camp with us at Nexus!

2008 Matt Thornton Seminar a Huge Success

Once again, SBG International president Matt Thornton showed why he is among the best functional martial arts coaches in the world with his recent seminar at Nexus (July 14 & 15th). Focusing on the proper learning, drilling and application of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu fundamentals, Matt had everyone on the mat, from beginners to advanced students, noticeably improve their grappling games over the course of the weekend.

Pride veteran Murilo "Ninja" Rua, formerly of the Chute Boxe team, will be heading to Massachusetts in Jan 2008 as part of his preparation for his upcoming fight in Cage Rage. Ninja's month-long training camp in will be based out of NEXUS.

Nexus Competition Team Updates

Nexus scored big in its first team effort at the Massachusetts State BJJ No Gi tournament held in Lakeville on Dec. 2nd, earning 2nd place for Teams. This was the first tournament for several of our novice students and everyone looked great, even when some divisions were combined and they were forced to compete against larger or more experienced opponents.

BJJ blue belt Ryan Parker has been on fire lately on the northeast grappling circuit. First he swept both the Advanced No Gi and Intermediate Gi divisions at the Dragon Lair Grappling Championship early last month, then followed that great performance with an incredible day of competition at the NAGA Northeast Grappling Championships held in New Jersey on Nov. 10th. Ryan competed in a number of divisions, racking up 11 wins and 3 losses (yes, 14 matches in one day!), including two gold medals.

Also congratulations to Cesar Barros for his most recent victory at the Untamed mixed martial arts competition held at White’s of Westport in September.
